The Navigators Native Nations Network seeks to establish God’s work in the Native Nations through generations of indigenous people living and discipling among the lost. Current ministry locations and influences include Albuquerque, Phoenix, college campuses, and the Navajo and Hopi Nations. There are 573 federally recognized tribes and approximately 5.2 million Native Americans within the United States.
Tom and Delphina Johnson are co-directors of the Navigators Native Nations Network. They are students of effective ministry among Native people. They wondered why, after 500 years of having the gospel, less than five percent of Native people identify as having a faith in Christ? Many Native people have difficulty getting past a highly contextualized Western gospel and church model. They believe that becoming a Christian requires forsaking their identity as Native people. Such feelings are rooted in centuries of flawed missionary efforts and tensions from historical events.
Prayers For Native Nations
- Pray that emerging Native leaders currently being discipled would spark a movement of whole life discipleship and bring healing to those who have been marginalized for so long.
- Pray for the outreach of the high school program Native R.I.S.E. (Rising Indigenous Student Empowerment). This is a mentoring program for Native young adults and students in a culturally affirming atmosphere. It also provides a natural opening for sharing the gospel.
- Pray for the elders of the Navajo and Hopi Nations who have been hit hard by COVID-19. Praise God for volunteers within the communities who are committed to serving through practical help.
- Pray that God would raise up more young leaders within other Native Nations to share God’s love in a culturally relevant way to their own communities.
There before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. Revelation 7:9
