Living as Jesus lived—is that even possible? According to Scripture, becoming like Jesus is not only possible, but is God’s intended purpose for His adopted children.
This Bible study includes four truths to guide you toward becoming like Jesus in your day-to-day life. Reflect on these truths from Scripture as you answer the questions below.
Becoming Like Jesus: Purpose
1. Our lives find meaning and purpose as we understand that God wants to conform us to Christ.
“Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me” Luke 9:23 (NIV).
“In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory” Ephesians 1:11-12 (NIV).
What are specific ways you believe God intends to accomplish this purpose in your daily life?
Becoming Like Jesus: God’s Plan & Power
2. When we know God’s ultimate plan and His power to accomplish His purpose, we can accept and respond to the things that happen in our lives instead of spending our days resisting and reacting.
“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God” Colossians 3:1 (NIV).
“Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble” 1 Peter 3:8 (NIV).
What do you learn from these Scriptures about how we should respond to God’s plan?
Becoming Like Jesus: Strength & Peace
3. As we accept God’s plan and yield to His Spirit, we will experience His strength and peace when encountering trials and difficulties in this uncertain world.
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” John 14:27 (NIV).
“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful” Colossians 3:15 (NIV).
What do you learn from these Scriptures about accepting God’s plan and His peace?
Becoming Like Jesus: Freedom & Confidence
4. Trusting God in all circumstances frees us and gives us confidence that God is working all things together for our good—which is to become like Jesus.
King David prayed in Psalm 138:8: The LORD will vindicate me; your love, LORD, endures forever—do not abandon the works of your hands (NIV).
Write a prayer of surrender and commitment, asking God to mold your life into the likeness of His Son.
