About Laura Jenkins
We have been on staff with The Navigators since 2000, walking alongside children and families that live in the East Central Neighborhoods of Albuquerque. Laura directs Juntos (“together” in Spanish), an outreach to neighborhood children. Fred is a PE coach and athletic director at the local Catholic school where our children, Harmony and Kathryn, attend.
Juntos (which means “together” in Spanish) is a cooperative effort between several churches and organizations to walk alongside students in Albuquerque. Juntos students are from neighborhoods that are vulnerable to violence, poverty and brokenness. However, we see these same neighborhoods as rich in cultural diversity, having strong relational and family bonds, full of young people who are passionate & developing leaders, and loved by the Lord. It is our desire to live out the Gospel alongside the youth of these communities so that they will be equipped to lead their families and neighbors into relationship with Jesus Christ and the redemption that He brings not only to individuals, but to whole communities.
Currently we have about 100 children involved in Juntos. We have a weekly program where kids in grades K-8 learn the Bible, memorize Scripture and worship together. This program is also a perfect opportunity for our young leaders (who graduated from the program) to utilize and develop their leadership skills and knowledge of God’s Word. In the summer of 2014 we launched an initiative specifically for young men so they can be discipled as well as mentored in education, jobs and life skills. The fall of 2014 is our target date to relaunch education programming for our youngest students.
One of our favorite parts of this ministry is the long term relationships we have developed as we walk with individuals and families through life! God has allowed us to see physical and spiritual generations birthed and growing as we rely on His promises in Isaiah 58:12 “Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, restorer of Streets with Dwellings.”
