1 Peter 3:8-12

1 Peter 3:8-12 … Following the brief but essential remarks on marriage, Peter’s passage on godly living continues with more very important guidance for life. We could summarize the instruction in 1 Peter 3:8-9 this way: “Be a blessing to everyone you meet today!” If we all did that, intentionally, purposefully, and meaningfully, the world would be a different and more wonderful place. The words of the passage: harmonious, sympathetic, kind-hearted, and humble in spirit are all things we can work on and make our contacts with others a truly wonderful, spirit-lifting, experience. Interestingly, the words are not describing utopia, they’re describing something everyone can achieve. The reasons for this kind of “be-a-blessing” behavior are given next (v.10), which is the power of words. What we say can build up or tear down; it can encourage or discourage. The book of James is very strong on controlling what we say because of the serious damage that casual, unthoughtful speech can have.

Using a quote from Psalm 34:15, Peter then reminds us that “the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are attentive to their prayer.” Many, many problems in life could be avoided if we would memorize and live daily by the admonitions of 1 Peter 3:8-9.
