1 John 2:24-29 … One of the most important admonitions in Scripture is found here in verse 24. It’s this: “See that what you heard from the beginning remains in you …”,or as Colossians 3:16 says the same thing: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly …” Internalizing Scripture so that it can be a light for your path (Psalm 119:105) is one of the most important things you can do in life. The promise here is that, as you allow God’s Word to abide in you, the triune God will abide in you as well. Referring to Colossians again provides help to us: it proclaims that God has given us this great mystery of Christianity, which is, “… Christ in you, the hope of glory.” (Colossians 1:27) All this is helped and supported by the Holy Spirit (that’s the “anointing” referred to in 1 John 2:27). As we abide in Him, then our confidence, desire and drawing to Him increases throughout life and into eternity. It’s from this wonderful assurance of 1 John that we get that great and familiar hymn, “Abide with Me, fast falls the eventide … Help of the helpless, O abide with me.”
