Living in Financial Community

There’s a lot of talk these days about managing personal finances. But we’re not as often reminded to consider how our financial choices affect those around us. Financial adviser Matt Bell suggests five elements of a healthy financial community.
  1. Living in financial truth. This means living within the truth of our financial situation (living within our means) and the truth of our commitments (using money to strengthen relationships, support causes we believe in, and pursue important goals).
  2. Influencing others. Whether we realize it or not, our financial decisions impact the people around us. We’re not responsible for the decisions others make, but being aware of the impact our decisions have on others can help us make wiser choices. This is in concert with the biblical teaching that there are some things that may be permissible yet not constructive for the good of others (1 Corinthians 10:23).
  3. Sharing with others. The Bible teaches us to share with others (1 Timothy 6:18). What do you own that you could make available to someone else? Think of five items you own that you’d be willing to share with others. This isn’t just about saving money; it’s about building relationships.
  4. Teaching others. Our culture teaches us to be competitive. If we discover a good idea, we’re encouraged to keep it to ourselves. But God designed us for contribution. As you pick up good ideas for financial management, pass them on to your friends, family members, and children.
  5. Spurring each other on. One of the best ways to put good ideas into practice is to meet with a small group of friends to discuss ideas and provide mutual accountability and encouragement. It may feel risky to invite people into such a group. But chances are you’ll all learn more about the wise use of money, and discussing this topic just may take your friendships to a deeper level of trust.
Each of you should look not only
to your own interests,
but also to the interests of others.

—Philippians 2:4
