The Wheel®

Throughout his ministry, The Navigators’ founder and first president Dawson Trotman used illustrations or diagrams to help others remember basic principles of the Christian life. In the 1930s he described the balanced Christian life using a three-legged stool—the legs representing prayer, the Word, and witnessing. But he became dissatisfied with the illustration; it left the Christian sitting down! So he developed the concept into a wheel. The diagram below effectively illustrates the balanced life of an obedient Christian.

The Hub: Christ the Center

The key to living a victorious, Spirit-filled Christian life is to keep Jesus Christ as the center and Lord of all we do. Just as the driving force in a wheel comes from the hub, so the power to live the Christian life comes from Jesus Christ.		 The Navigators Wheel Illustration
 The Rim: Obedience to Christ

The rim represents the Christian responding to Christ’s lordship through wholehearted, day-to-day obedience to Him.

The Bible is our spiritual food as well as our sword for spiritual battle. It is the foundational spoke for effective Christian living.


 Witnessing

The natural overflow of a rich, vibrant life in Christ should be sharing with others how they can have this life.
Prayer
(John 15:7, Philippians 4:6,7)
Prayer is sharing your heart with the One who longs for your companionship and who cares about your concerns. Prayer unleashes the power of God in your personal battles and in the lives of those for whom you pray.		 Fellowship
(Matthew 18:20, Hebrews 10:24, 25)
God has directed Christians to build each other up through interdependence and loving relationship with each other.
