As
you begin a new year, are you looking for a fresh way to search out
God’s message to you? Consider spending some time digging deeper into
one of the verses from your regular Bible reading.
Navigator Kelley McCutchen used the following verse analysis with
students at a conference in Bonn, Germany. She encouraged the students
to use the suggestions as a way to delve into a verse’s meaning and
application.
To start, you might try Jeremiah 33:3, John 15:5, or Philippians 4:6,7.
Write the verse out in your own words.- Memorize the verse.
- Write your name in place of nouns and pronouns like “Israel,” “my people,” or “you,” and read the verse through.
- Is this verse quoted somewhere else in the Bible? Which cross-references for the verse can you find?
- Which characteristics of God or Jesus are expressed in this verse?
- Read the verse several times, emphasizing a different word each time.
- Does the verse contain conditions? What are they?
- Does the verse contain promises? What are they?
- Take time to talk with God about the verse.
- Take time to be still and listen.
- What does this verse motivate you to do?
- What expectations or desires does the verse awaken in you?
- Write down your thoughts and insights about the verse.
- How can you put the verse into action in your life?
