A Church Success Story

About five years ago, I accepted the invitation of one of the elders of a local church who had been involved with The Navigators overseas to help him determine what it would mean for the church if it were to become more intentional in its making of disciples. I soon began meeting regularly with the associate pastor to help lead a task force that met fairly often for the next two years.

During that time, we defined what a disciple of Jesus Christ looked like at that church. Then we developed a road map of a person's spiritual journey, mapped courses already in existence to the road map, and developed a Spiritual Growth Plan/Survey to be used by the congregation to assess exactly where each stood. In addition, we designed PAL, a system of maintaining loving mutual prayer and accountability relationships that was designed to be implemented in individual life-on-life situations. The church has added a weekly on-line newsletter recently and additional courses are scheduled for presentation beginning early next year.

The church recently completed the "40 Days of Purpose" campaign. Up to that point, the church had only 7-10 small groups. I was part of the campaign planning process, helped train the first group of leaders, and Kathie and I also led one of the almost 60 small neighborhood groups during the campaign. A number of people came to Christ in the various groups, and a number rededicated their lives to His Lordship.

Our group was made up of almost all non-members, most of whom were formerly involved with us in Bible study at other churches. One of the attendees has since become a regular attendee at our church services and is looking to be involved in a mission experience next year. The church now has 25-30 small neighborhood groups that meet weekly. One of the couples was baptized, and two of the couples hosted children from the former Soviet Union for six weeks this past summer.

A Personal Success Story

Leaders Who Last, by Dave Kraft, came out this year and has been received with very favorable response by the people using it. I had the pleasure of editing the original manuscript and then worked with Dave to develop a workbook and Leader's Guide that is designed to be used for group presentation of the material. I also work as editor of the monthly newsletter for a local ministry that is directed to fathers and is in the process of expanding using the Internet. I am working with the head of that ministry on the production of a book and workbook that describe how unseen generational issues affect parenting styles and limit or enhance the effectiveness of fathers.
