How do you know when it's time to go?

When we were trying to decide whether to leave Asia, after two decades of ministry, we worked out a five point checklist which I called "How do you know when it's time to go?"

All five points came up positive enabling us to make the decision with confidence. Subsequently I have used this check list for other changes in direction.

  1. Is there is a sense of closure? Have done all I know how to do? Have I fulfilled my job description?

    closure

  2. What is the call of God for me at this stage in life? Are my calling and gifts in convergence, or would a change help bring this about? Is there a different kind of ministry that would more closely fit my gifts?

    call

  3. What is my career plan? Is it time to begin a new phase in my life's work? Is it time to upgrade my education or get new input to help me achieve my personal lifetime goals?

    career

  4. What is my energy level? Do I have personal or family medical needs that require attention? What are the needs of my wife and children in education or personal development? What are the ages of my parents? Do they need my help? Do I need to raise additional financial support? Are there inter-personal conflicts in the family or among coworkers that do not seem to respond to sincere attempts to resolve?

    conflicts

  5. Do nationals and fellow workers confirm that it would be best for me to move on to allow the work to grow?

    confirmation
