Chicago
Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and He will do this. Psalm 37:5
John and Julie carry out the Navigator mission by living and working among the people in North Lawndale, one of the poorest neighborhoods in Chicago, where:
- 57% of residents are in the criminal justice system.
- 10,000 adult males incarcerated.
- Over 50% of the population over age 25 are high school drop-outs.
- 59% of 20 to 24-year-olds are unemployed.
The overwhelming employment need presents an opportunity to bring Christ to North Lawndale. Navigators and local residents operate a non-profit organization called Breaking Ground. Breaking Ground consists of a job-readiness school called APL Teaching Factory (APL) and an affordable home program. Through APL, we build relationships, discover Christ through daily devotions, and help students find employment.
The housing program, which employs more than ten graduates, allows for long-term discipleship. John works alongside these men, where he invests in their lives physically and spiritually. Julie works with homebuyers, providing opportunities to build relationships with future neighbors. John and Julie also host a neighborhood small group at their house every Sunday night for food, fellowship, and fun.
