If We Want to GROW We Have to Go
July 2008 Luncheon Recap
Speaker: Glena Gebara
Who says Bible Study groups all have to look alike? Glena Gebara has found that there’s always a fresh approach to teaching the Bible!
Glena wears many hats! She is a Private Banking Manager with Bank of the West. She has a diploma and Pastor’s license from Glory Christian Fellowship’s School of Ministry. She serves as a Chaplain with UNMH and she is a wife, mother, daughter and friend to a whole collection of special people. Because of these diverse responsibilities and relationships, she has had to find creative ways to make a difference for the Kingdom of God.
At the office, Glena has built relationships with her co-workers and facilitated a Bible Study for quite some time now, using a book study called “Learning to Trust God” by Deborah Kern. The discussions that came out of this study have enabled them to openly share their feelings as they’ve learned to trust each other and to discover who God is.
In her home, Glena has reached out to her immediate family as well as uncles, cousins, parents and neighbors who saw something in her personal life that they wanted to know more about. The weekly get-togethers center around food and camaraderie. Her husband cooks and, since Glena’s family has a lot of cowboys, the only requirements for participation in the group were “No fighting, no cussing and no knives”. Now these people that she loves have started praying together, asking questions and being transparent.
Even young people have responded to Glena’s method of making the Bible interesting and relevant. She hosts a weekly event for college students that she calls “Faith Factor”, modeled after the TV show, Fear Factor. The students discuss various life situations that they draw out of a hat, comparing and contrasting fear versus faith scenarios. For some “lucky” participants there is even a challenge that usually involves eating something gross!
Glena lives out her faith firmly believing that “the position you occupy in society is not an accidental one.”
