Finding our Calling in our Careers

Faith@Work is a Navigators sponsored monthly luncheon for business women in Albuquerque, NM.  Its mission is helping business and professional women live out their faith more intentionally in their workplaces.  We do this through several different means:

•    Presenting challenging messages each month from local practitioners who are learning how to live on purpose for God.
•    Promoting, developing and implementing Bible Studies in the workplace for women across the city.
•    Recruiting, training and utilizing volunteers in a variety of ways to reach out and connect with other business women each month at the luncheons.

Faith@Work Message, June 21, 2010;  "Finding our Calling in our Careers"
Albuquerque, New Mexico
Speaker:  Angel Lucero

Angel loves her job!  Every time she goes to work, she spends her day listening, encouraging and empathizing with her clients as they share the joys and sorrows and the everyday events of their lives.  She gets to learn from peers and utilize her training to help others put forth their best.  While this might sound like the job description for a professional counselor, Angel’s line of work is of a more artistic nature:  she’s a hair stylist.

Beauty School wasn’t her first career choice.  Angel travelled a winding road of jobs and career considerations, before finding herself where she is today.  From broadcasting to dental hygiene; from New Mexico to Hawaii and back, the lessons God has taught her along the way have been invaluable.  Her greatest life lessons though, have come from behind the chair in a beauty salon.

What has she learned?
That there is joy to be found in everything we do, whether it’s the “perfect job” or not.
That people are what matters most.
That there is something good in every bad situation.
That God is with us no matter where we work, and He wants to be glorified in our work.

We weren’t at all surprised (and actually chuckled) to hear Angel’s observation that sometimes her clients choose not to go with her professional recommendation for a hairstyle that suits them best.  They confidently insist on a cut that doesn’t always bring out their best features.   We may laugh at ourselves with that story, but in reality we often respond to God the same way.  Even though He knows what’s best for us, we sometimes choose to go a different way.  What a difference we can see in our lives when we surrender to God’s counsel and let Him “design” us as He thinks best.

Consider this principle:  A career is something we do for ourselves, but a calling is something we do for God.  Do you agree with this?  How would you define your current job?  Are you living out your calling from God in the workplace—to be salt and light in a secular world—or just pursuing a career?
