Finding Security in an Insecure World

Faith@Work is a Navigators sponsored monthly luncheon for business women in Albuquerque, NM.  Its mission is helping business and professional women live out their faith more intentionally in their workplaces.  We do this through several different means:

•    Presenting challenging messages each month from local practitioners who are learning how to live on purpose for God.
•    Promoting, developing and implementing Bible Studies in the workplace for women across the city.
•    Recruiting, training and utilizing volunteers in a variety of ways to reach out and connect with other business women each month at the luncheons.

Faith@Work Message, February 28, 2011;  "Finding Security in an Insecure World" Albuquerque, New Mexico
Speaker: Susan Jameson; Private Mortgage Banker, Wells Fargo Bank

“We do better with a storm when we know the beginning and the end,” said Susan Jameson, the speaker at our February luncheon.  “Like the weatherman on TV, telling us when to expect the storm to pass,” we feel better knowing when the worst will be over.  But most trials in our lives don’t come with a televised update.  We don’t know how long we’ll have to be in them, so we can start to get discouraged.

Every one of us has experienced the impact of this current recession in some way.  As a nation we are grieving the loss of a better time, when most of us were experiencing more fruitfulness.  Now we find our jobs more difficult and our contentment more elusive.  We deal daily with irritated customers, disillusioned employees and dwindling sales.  It can be hard to stay positive in today’s market.

Susan sits in the epicenter of the storm. The mortgage industry has been especially hard hit by the recession. She shared with us how difficult it is to deal with this reality every day, and how it has made her job more challenging.  But, in the process of wrestling with her own discouragement and weariness, she has rediscovered the joy of trusting God and letting Him use her.  And she has been reminded that the way we handle difficult times says a lot about where we put our trust.  “People aren’t looking for you to have it together; they’re looking to see what happens when you don’t” (from Beth Moore)

We came away from our February luncheon with five tips on how to stay focused when we get tired in the storm:

1. Spend extra time with God.  Take a day off; give Him your full attention for one 8 hour day.
2. Find a prayer partner; someone who’s praying with you and for you.
3. Find creative ways to meet with God.  Susan likes “audio/visual” aides; praise music, etc.
4. Focus on people in your work, not on tasks.
5. Lead others.  People want role models to follow.
