Even a Lowly Shepherd Like Me

Faith @ Work Monthly Message: December 10, 2007
Featured Speaker:  Sylvia Tarro

Consider the shepherds of that first Christmas Eve. They were the lowliest of the low; yet the first to receive the heavenly announcement.  They had dirty, calloused hands, yet they lifted them in holy praise and worship. How much like them are we?

Sylvia Tarro brought that long ago evening to life in her message at our Christmas luncheon last month.  She made us feel the loneliness and lowliness of the simple shepherds in the fields. She described the terror and awe and curiosity of these men as they heard the angel and then followed the star. We put ourselves in their place at the manger in Bethlehem. What a great way to prepare our hearts for Christmas.

Sylvia's challenge to us was to read the story of the shepherds, imagine ourselves as one of them, and let the good news pierce our hearts. Just like the shepherds, we are lowly yet we have been given the gift of the greatest news on earth. Just like the shepherds, we are dirty and poor, but we can offer our hands in praise and worship.

Finally, just like shepherds, we can serve in humble ways that honor our King.  We were encouraged this month, to look for simple ways to serve those who serve us on Christmas day.  One suggestion was to get up early on Christmas morning, bake some sweet rolls, and deliver them to people who had to work that day at gas stations, convenience stores, hospitals, etc. Tell them "thank you for serving," and tell them God loves them!
