A Humbled Bumble

Faith@Work is a Navigators sponsored monthly luncheon for business women in Albuquerque, NM.  Its mission is helping business and professional women live out their faith more intentionally in their workplaces.  We do this through several different means:

•    Presenting challenging messages each month from local practitioners who are learning how to live on purpose for God.
•    Promoting, developing and implementing Bible Studies in the workplace for women across the city.
•    Recruiting, training and utilizing volunteers in a variety of ways to reach out and connect with other business women each month at the luncheons.

Faith@Work Message, August 22, 2011;  "A Humbled Bumble" Albuquerque, NM
Speaker: Amy Allen, Graphic Design Artist, Author, Business Owner

“A Humbled Bumble is someone who has made a mess by doing things her own way and has been humbled—laid low—and is not longer proud or arrogant.”

This is the title Amy Allen has given herself—a title for which she is grateful to God and is comfortable wearing.  And when you hear her story you not only believe the title fits, but you rejoice with her!  Amy has come from humiliation to humility, from independence to dependence on God; in her marriage, her work and her walk with Him.  If you didn’t get to hear her story last month, I would highly recommend you pick up a copy of the CD!

Amy had been an entrepreneur since she was 10 years old.  From her early days folding tracts for her grandpa at ½ penny per tract, to jobs delivering papers, roofing houses and “hot-walking” horses, she always loved working hard…and being paid for it!  In fact, the pursuit of money and success became a driving force in her life.  She believed the worldview that anything was possible if you worked hard enough, so she pursued her dream of being a graphic designer.

Then her world started to unravel.  She wasn't working well with others, she became a workaholic, and she was uptight and reclusive. Her marriage suffered a serious blow when she discovered her husband had been cheating on her.  Looking back now, Amy says, “God will do whatever it takes to bring us back to Himself.”  He took her to rock bottom.  “I knew I needed to surrender my life to Him, but it was so hard!”

Through circumstances only God could orchestrate, Amy found her way to Him.  And amazingly, at the same time, her husband found his way to God as well.  She surrendered her work to God and became a successful artist and writer, honoring Him in the process. Today, she and her husband are happily married, with two beautiful daughters and Amy is pursuing her dream God’s way, with humility!

Amy’s key points:

1. Anything I focus on can quickly take God’s place in my life.  I need to focus/depend fully on God.

2. Seek God first in all things

3. I can humble myself—or God can do it for me.  When God does it, it hurts more.

4. I need to use the gifts and abilities God gave me to bless others, not myself.

5. Money does not determine my worth.  It is not WHO I am, but WHOSE I am.

6. I need to let God lead.
