April 2011 I Found One!

Dear Partners in Ministry,

I Found One!

When I was a kid, I loved hunting Easter eggs. There was nothing like spotting a glowing, colored egg in the green foliage of the lawn or bushes! “I found one” was what you’d hear from me and a dozen other delighted kids.

Well, I admit it. I still like to find Easter eggs. But, as a grandpa, I’ve been banished from running ahead of the kids to hunt the eggs. Nowadays, I’m the one who places the eggs in easy and hard to find places. It’s fun to watch the kids run all over the yard carefully looking and then hearing, “I found one!”

Last year, one of our granddaughters found one and she just stood there, holding the egg, vibrating with excitement. Her movements were barely visible to the eye. (If you are older than 50, I’d recommend you don’t try vibrating with excitement, or you might blow a blood vessel!)

These days the eggs are plastic, come in blue, yellow, orange, pink, purple & green. They are usually filled with goodies. It reminds me of all of the ways that God blesses us.  Examples of His blessings are receiving a truth from the Word, introducing someone to Jesus, experiencing a wonderful provision, being asked to disciple someone, or an answer to prayer.  It makes me want to say, “I found one!”, like I did years ago when looking for the eggs. When you think of it, it is in our nature to seek and find. God is like that too!

After the grandkids are done looking for their eggs, they come in, open them up and happily discover their treasure. It seems like every year, a few weeks after the hunt, when I’m working on the yard, I find one or two. I smile, look around to see if anyone is watching me, pick up the egg, shake it and hear the treasure rattle around. I put the egg back for when the kids visit, to see if they’ll find the eggs. I’ll even tell them that there are more out there, and you just have to keep looking. God is like that too!

The spiritual landscape is full of God’s treasures that He is patiently waiting for us to discover over our whole lifetime. Sometimes we stop looking. If we keep at it, we’ll pull out basketfuls of the treasures God wants us to discover. I think it’s a mindset we need to have of loving the hunt and celebrating the find! I hope that I value the treasures that God wants me to find through life, like a little boy, looking for my eggs in the grass, or like my granddaughter vibrating over the find.

When was the last time you said, “I found one”?

Wishing you a Blessed Easter!
