My heart trusts in Him

 Psalms 28:7 (NASB95)
7 The LORD is my strength and my shield; My heart trusts in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart exults, And with my song I shall thank Him.

“My heart trusts in Him”

On a recent vacation, we stayed on the eighteenth floor of a resort hotel that had a balcony. We were happy that we would have a view of the ocean and be able to open the slider and sit outside. When we got up to the room, going out on the balcony was one of the first things that my wife and I did, or should I say attempted to do.

The idea of having the balcony was one thing, but stepping out on it was quite another. Both of us experienced some real fears walking on it. Why…? There were hundreds of balconies on the building and thousands of them all over the city. It was crazy, but we were uneasy stepping out.

We laughed about our fears, but still they were real. Neither one of us had ever been up that high in a room with a door to the outside. There was no personal experience that had prepared us to “just step out” without some assessment. We both had to go through a thought process.  Mine went something like this: “I wonder what the weight limit is… Will it hold me…? Will it hold both of us…? Well I haven’t heard of any balconies snapping off the side of buildings and plunging to the ground… I don’t see any yellow tape stretched across any of the sliding doors where there was once a balcony… I see lots of other people enjoying their balconies… Ok, I’ll walk out and sit down on the chair and take a chance.”  My wife too stepped out and kept her back against the wall of the building as she enjoyed (?) taking in the view. Each day we got a bit braver in stepping out, but we never were fully comfortable during our short stay. I don’t think either of us leaned over the railing to look down!

When I think of the phrase, “My heart trusts in Him,” it is a bit like standing on the thin concrete balcony. Why should I put my trust in Him? Putting my trust in Him impacts my whole life as well as my eternal destiny. Why…? Well, lots of others have “put their trust in Him.” In this verse, David says he’s trusting in Him from his heart. Two reasons come to mind why “My heart trusts in Him.” First, the gospel story of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection helps me to understand that He is a loving God who has my best interest on His heart. Second, experiencing His presence in my life over the years, through various circumstances and seeing how God has accomplished His purposes has helped me to put my trust in Him. How about you? Are you at the threshold of the slider just assessing? Or, are you standing on the balcony, fully allowing your heart to trust in Him? What is your next step?
