And with my song I shall thank Him

Psalms 28:7 (NASB95)
7 The LORD is my strength and my shield; My heart trusts in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart exults, And with my song I shall thank Him.

“And with my song I shall thank Him”

This year, my wife and I have been hooked on a popular TV show where the competition is between singers. It is amazing how critical I can be of the contestants, just like the judges. Yet, if I was asked to sing, it would cause pain to those who listened.

As I find myself at the end of this verse, it says, “with my song, I shall thank Him.”  David, the author of this verse, played music and sang before King Saul and his court. He undoubtedly had musical talent. Who knows, if He lived today maybe we’d be listening to him on that TV show. But, since I lack David’s musical talent, I’m left with the dilemma of thanking God through song.

Music is extremely powerful! It can get little toddlers up off the floor bouncing to the beat. A song can unify a country! It can bring us to a worship experience like nothing else.  Styles of music can even cause conflict between what is otherwise a heterogeneous group. Music is mentioned so much in scripture that one would have to conclude that God likes all kinds of music… which brings me back to my dilemma. I think that He wants me to thank Him in song.

We have a granddaughter who lives nearby and comes to visit often. When she comes over in a good mood, it doesn’t take much for her to bust out in song. She’ll march around the house singing louder and louder! She’s almost four. I have no idea what she is singing about, but it’s like she can’t contain herself. If I say anything, she just gets louder! Mimi and Papa (her names for us) just smile at each other.

Our granddaughter hasn’t learned to be “sophisticated” and “discreet” like me. I tend to keep a tight lip. I think that the next time she comes over I’m going to join her and march around with her in song. Maybe she can coach me in the spontaneity of just letting it out when I want to exalt the Lord with my song of thanks. So, if you come to our house and hear strange loud noises, it is just me singing to our Lord.

God isn’t a judge like those on the TV program. He is like a grandparent who smiles!
