And I am helped
Psalms 28:7 (NASB95)
“7 The LORD is my strength and my shield; My heart trusts in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart exults, And with my song I shall thank Him.”
A few years ago my wife and I went on the trip of my dreams, (not so much hers.). I took a year and a half to plan and train for a bicycling trip across America. A lot of things had to work in order for me to accomplish the goal. My body needed to stay healthy. The bike needed to stay in good repair. The older support vehicle needed to keep running. My wife needed to maintain a good attitude and a servant heart in helping me achieve “my” dream. (Thanks sweetheart!) There were a lot of other factors, but these four seemed to be the major areas that could stop the trip or contribute to its success.
There were several challenges in those four areas. I’m pretty sure we could write a book. We had to have a tow truck out to assist us three times. We visited three tire shops, ultimately replacing all but one of the tires. Note: just because old tires look good with tread, it doesn’t mean that they are safe!
The objective was to complete the trip and get home safely. That is what God wants for each us too. He’s bringing us home one day at a time. During my bicycling adventure, there were times that we were stopped and the trip was threatened. However, when we called out for help, it arrived every time and we continued on our journey. There was never a time when the problem disappeared all by itself, or when we were somehow transported past an obstacle. We had to call for help and take the time for whatever the issue was.
As followers of Jesus, the great adventure with Him seems similar. We are all on the trip of a lifetime. I don’t think we are ever that far from the direction that He intends for us. The route we take is secondary to the destination. He’ll get us there. There are always obstacles and setbacks that may seem to threaten the goal of getting home safely. After I’ve called out to Him for help, I don’t recall a time when I was supernaturally transported to the other side of trouble. That doesn’t mean that He hasn’t responded with His help. God comes to our aid, helps us through the challenge and uses it to transform us as we move along on the journey of life.
“…and I am helped…” Don’t you feel relieved when the tow truck arrives? You are no longer stranded and alone. God provides that for us. We just need to make the call, wait, accept His assistance and keep on moving.
