The Sweet Aroma of Christ

The Sweet Aroma of Christ
By Patti Holechek
We are all familiar with 2 Corinthians 2:14 where Paul says, “But
thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ
and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of
him.” I have heard and recited that verse many times, but this past
year I have had the privilege of experiencing, in a significant way,
what Paul was talking about. The sweet aroma of Christ as seen in the
love and support of believers was more fragrant to me than the largest
florist shop! While one never desires medical problems, God used a very difficult time in my life to minister to me through friends and fellow believers. I never before completely understood the power of a simple card that said, “I’m thinking of you. You’re in my prayers” . . . or of a meal prepared and brought to my house, or errands run and floors vacuumed.
God spoke love to my heart through so many people . . . Navigator friends and staff I didn’t even know, my small group at church, my Mom’s in Touch group, our support team, neighbors, even my children’s friends and their families! So many sacrifices were made for my family and me, that I don’t have the space here to name them all.
As I think back on those months last spring and summer, I have to ask myself, how good am I at being a friend? Do I take the time to do the little things, or sometimes the big things, that communicate God’s love to someone? Am I paying attention to what people say so that I know when they are hurting or am I too busy and distracted with my own interests and concerns?
It doesn’t take much really . . . just a note, a phone call, or a listening ear. Imagine the difference we could make in our relationships with one another and non-believers if we just took the time to slow down and be that fragrant aroma of Christ in everyday situations. I have to admit that I have a long way to go, but with the Lord’s help and the example of others, I hope to become more fragrant each day! We, the Body of Christ, really can be the sweet aroma of Him to one another and to a hurting world as we let His love minister through us to others.
