Audio Bibles for prisoners (Fall 2006)

At least 70 percent of all inmates entering prison are functionally illiterate, and 58 percent of all adults in America will never read another book after high school. How did Jesus evangelize and disciple His non-reading followers?

As part of our new emphasis on oral learning, The Navigators has been working on producing a prison discipleship audio program called the Running the Race Discipleship Program. This program consists of 20 discipleship lessons in four areas of The Runner, The Coach, The Team, and The Race. Each lesson consists of five sections that feature a Bible Story, Your Story, Plus Five Verses, a Memory Verse, and a Learning Tool.

These lessons and the entire audio program are recorded and put onto audio boxes. These players are made by MegaVoice and can hold up to 140 hours of audio materials. We have also included on the player a presentation of the Gospel and God’s story in English, Spanish, and hip-hop. The audio devices are now being tested in six Colorado prisons.

These machines are not used to replace person-to-person discipleship, but to come alongside and enhance the development process. The audio lessons are helpful for integrating oral learning and teaching. With so many inmates who cannot or will not read, the oral method of teaching is critical to reach many.
