Each of these articles has come from experiences in prayer settings across the US. I pray they will bless you as much as they have blessed me.

Prayer is experiencing the presence of God

Focus on God's Character: Love (PDF) Focus on God's Character: Love (PDF)
As you gaze into the facet of the Love of God, allow yourself to be drawn into the depth and richness of His love. Discipline yourself to remain focused specifically on His Love. Especially try to continue focusing on His Love for you, rather than switching to your love for Him. Enjoy God's Love. Rest in God's Love. Receive God's Love. You can only receive God's love to the degree to which you allow God to love you, regardless of the amount of love God has for you. Let God love you.

Focus on God's Character: Peace (PDF) Focus on God's Character: Peace (PDF)
Gaze into the facet of the Peace of God. The peace that God brings is in contrast to the peace offered in the world. I've heard that there are instruments designed to fly into the center of a hurricane and measure its force. These "flying eyes" are able to look straight down into a hurricane from above. What they see is calm. Both the sea and air are calm at the core of the storm. But just outside the core is absolute destruction and chaos! That might describe how the peace of God affects our lives. Chaos and destruction can be all around us, but at the center, at the core of our being, the peace of Christ rules.

Holding Ropes (large file:5.5MB/PDF) Holding Ropes (large file:5.5MB/PDF)
As we pray for each other, our primary goal should be to get our friends in front of Jesus! So often I hear people telling Jesus what to do and how to do it. How rude! How presumptuous! These friends of the paralytic in Mark 2 and Luke 5 who held the ropes didn't have to shout down to Jesus, "Hey! He’s only paralyzed from the waist down! Could you heal just that part of him?" How ridiculous! They knew that they had done their best by just lowering him into the very presence of the Healer. Jesus took care of the rest.

How to Journal Psalms in the First Person (large file:3MB/PDF) How to Journal Psalms in the First Person (large file:3MB/PDF)
After the experience of Psalm 23, I began to experiment receiving other Psalms in the first person. Several principles soon fell into place. First, this is much more a listening exercise than a writing exercise. Allow God to speak. Give yourself freedom to experiment. This is a meditative exercise in which you are asking God, "What would it sound like if You, Lord spoke this Psalm to me right now, in the first person?"

Joshua Walks (PDF) Joshua Walks (PDF)
This is a reprint of a letter I received years ago telling of the power of walking around the territory where you minister and praying. The prayer is that of God's commitment to Joshua as he entered the promised land, "Every place on which the sole of your foot treads, I have given it to you, just as I spoke to Moses." Joshua 1:3 use this model for praying around your neighborhood, campus, city, any territory that God has given you charge of.

These are a few excerpts from my personal journal of the various ways I have engaged with the prayers of Scripture to make them more personal. Perhaps these examples will help you on your journey into intimacy with God.

Journaling Psalms in the First Person (large file: 3MB/PDF) Journaling Psalms in the First Person (large file: 3MB/PDF)
My story of receiving Psalm 23 in an unusual way from the Lord. He spoke Psalm 23 to me in the first person. Not David talking about the Shepherd, but the Shepherd speaking about Himself. Very personal. Very intimate.

Ketubah (PDF) Ketubah (PDF)
The Hebrew Ketubah is the traditional marriage covenant. This article will show the absolutely amazing parallels between the Ketubah and our relationship with Christ. For instance, in the Ketubah, the bridegroom leaves the prospective bride to go and prepare a home for them within his father's home. John 14:2 says, "In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you." Enjoy this expression of God's love and devotion for you.

Prayer in Crisis - Jeremiah (PDF) Prayer in Crisis - Jeremiah (PDF)
My observation has been that when life gets hard, we try to get out! Automatically we think that something must be amiss if life isn’t smooth and comfortable. Ponder, soak, and meditate on Jeremiah’s prayer in chapter 32. But before you read his beautiful and eloquent prayer beginning in verse 17, read the first sixteen verses to gain the context of his prayer.

Prayer in Crisis - The Disciples (1.7MB/PDF) Prayer in Crisis - The Disciples (1.7MB/PDF)
How did the disciples pray when they faced crisis? Perhaps our prayers would be answered in such a fashion if we were to reach into the mind of God and discover His heart. With the Kingdom of God as our focus, we will be praying Kingdom-expanding prayers. Our prayers should reflect the centrality of God's Kingdom in this world and our lives.

Have you ever wondered why God put all those prayers in the Bible? Perhaps He put them there to teach us how to pray! Dig into the prayers of Ephesians chapter 1 to discover the heart of God and instructions for how you should pray.

Prayer Study - Ephesians 3 (PDF) Prayer Study - Ephesians 3 (PDF)
Have you ever wondered why God put all those prayers in the Bible? Perhaps He put them there to teach us how to pray! Dig into the prayers of Ephesians chapter 3 to discover the heart of God and instructions for how you should pray.

Your Inner Sanctuary (PDF) Your Inner Sanctuary (PDF)
Have you ever tried to imagine the sanctuary spoken of in 1 Corinthians 3:16 as a real place inside you? I'm intrigued to envision what this temple environment within me might reveal. I've found that the reality of fellowshipping with the Lord is enhanced as I see with the eyes of my heart He and I connecting in this holy place.
