About the Chicago Metro Mission

Movement is defined as a sequence of related actions leading toward some end (Webster Dictionary). Our "end" is Matthew 28:19-20:  "Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations. . . ."

We believe that God’s kingdom most commonly moves through communities of believers who are living out the grace and truth of Jesus together where they live, work, study, and play. We would love to have you join us in doing this here in Chicago.

So who are we? We are a collection of men and women—some are on staff with The Navigators, most are not—who are seeking ways to live out Jesus’ kingdom message to those that are right around them, and helping others to do the same. Our desire is to see these relational communities of ordinary men and women with uncommon spiritual passion reaching out to every ethnic and socio-economic arena in our city—be it in the marketplace, in neighborhoods, on campus, among 20-somethings, through missional churches, in our urban areas, and among the major ethnic groups here in Chicago.

Here are some of the characteristics and needs that make up a Navigator Gospel movement:

Characteristics:
  • An organism rather than an organization.
  • A virus-like growth that infects people with the life-transforming Gospel.
  • Moves far beyond our direct influence.
  • Not limited by buildings.
  • Relationship-centered, not event-centered.
  • “Insiders” everywhere. (Insiders are people who incarnate and communicate the Gospel to those around them.)
Needs:
  • Leadership capacity.
  • Communication.
  • Investigating viable initiatives.
  • Culturally relevant materials.
  • Coaching and shepherding of leaders.
  • Funding at the right levels.
  • Protracted and continuing prayer.

Prayer

“Some say, ‘Prayer is work.’ Some say, ‘Prayer leads to work.’ But I say, ‘Prayer IS the work!'” (Jim Downing, one of the oldest living Navigators at age 93).

We are committed to prayer for the beginning and continuing of the Chicago Metro Ministry:

  • Three-day prayer sessions.
  • Identifying committed prayer warriors.
  • Communications with those who indicate they want to pray.
  • Quarterly prayer days with staff and key laborers.
  • Ethnic leaders’ prayer breakfasts for Navigator leaders as well as leaders of churches and other Christian organizations.

“The ministry can only move forward on its knees!”
