About the conference: In their own words

Glen Eyrie: Joining us today is Travis Stewart of Remuda Ranch and the True Campaign. Travis, how would you describe to someone what this conference will focus on?

Travis Stewart:
Last year we did our inaugural conference on eating disorders called Hungry for Hope. That conference presented a unique blend of theological and psychological perspectives on disordered eating and body image issues. We had such a marvelous response to that experience that we just had to do it again. So, as we thought about how to continue the excellence of that conference, but also make it fresh we concluded that we needed to focus on the issue of identity as it plays a role in eating and body image.

Eating disorders are the leading cause of death among all mental health issues (including suicide) and yet there is a great fear among Christians when faced with this issue. That is in part, because of the confusing topic of identity and self-esteem. Christian professionals and ministry leaders find themselves asking, "How do I help them recover a sense of who they are from a Biblical perspective? Do I build self-esteem or rebuke dangerous behaviors and outright denial? Do I encourage them to love themselves or practice self-denial?"

Hungry for Hope; Restoring Identity is a conference designed to equip Christian professionals and ministry leaders in the areas of body image and disordered eating with a special focus on the role of identity in recovery.

GE: This isn't a conference for those who personally struggle with these issues. Specifically, who do you consider your main audience for this conference?

TS:
Both professionals in the field of eating disorders (therapists, dieticians, physicians) and ministry leaders who want to learn more about these issues from a biblical perspective. We will have some joint sessions and many of the workshops will be in two tracks (professional and ministry).

GE: Will licensed professionals be able to receive Continuing Education Credits?

TS: Yes, many licensed professionals will be able to receive continuing education credits.  Remuda is approved by the following associations to provide continuing education. If you are unsure about accreditation please contact your licensing board. *(please see more info at bottom of page)

GE: Will we be hearing from the same speakers this year?

TS:
Yes! And no. Many of the same speakers will be returning. God really used those who spoke last year. Crowd favorites Don Worcester of Remuda Ranch and Constance Rhodes of FINDING balance (and author of Life Inside the Thin Cage who we hope will sing again) will both be with us again as will Caleb Mitchell, Elisa Mitchell, myself and Dena Cabrera. But we will have some exciting new voices as well. Dr. Ken Littlefield and Juliet Zuercher will be joining us. Ken has been with Remuda for many years and has served in many roles at Remuda. He will be bringing his unique blend of psychology and biblical wisdom along with his expertise on athletes and eating disorders. Juliet, who formerly served as Remuda Ranch's Director of Nutrition Services will be speaking as well. Juliet is the life of the party and one of the most qualified nutritionists in the field of eating disorders. I'm really excited to have both of them with us. If nothing else we are going to have fun with those two.

GE: What are two things you want attendees to take away from your conference?

TS:
Whenever I speak or present material I want people to walk away thinking new thoughts. Recently I've was reading the Parable of the Seeds in Matthew 13. In that story Jesus says some people "hear the word and receive it with joy" but eventually fall away. Others hear the word and "understand" it. It stood out to me that the difference is that one received it but the other understood it. I think what it means to understand means to have your paradigm (your worldview and assumptions) changed.

That's what I hope happens at this conference. I want us to take this knowledge about identity and eating disorders and allow God to change our paradigms in such a way that results in changed lives; ours and those we work with. That, in the end, is our only hope for helping people.

GE: Will you have workshops again? If so, what are the topics:
TS:
Of course. We are still working on the details but I can tell you that we will likely have workshops addressing the following topics:
  • Exploring your own identity as a therapist working with disordered eating and body image
  • Using experiential activities in therapy (we may actually go rock climbing!)
  • Pro anorexia/bulimia websites and identity
  • Families and identity
