John Thurman - Overcoming Depression

January 23-25, 2009

For You or a Loved one...

Depression is one of the greatest killers of our time. It impacts the mind, body and spirit, and ripples out to touch family, friends and work. Depression distorts our view of God as well as ourselves.

Whether you struggle with depression or are a loved one of someone fighting this disease, John Thurman wants to show you a way out. At this hope-filled, restorative conference, he will share 15 strategies for identifying, managing and overcoming depression that have worked in his family and in the lives of countless others. He incorporates times of teaching, Q&A, and reflection designed to help lead you out of the fog of depression and back to a healthy life.

Using Biblical teachings as well as cutting-edge research, John will leave you with a renewed sense of hope and a practical plan of action to win the battle against depression.

IN HIS OWN WORDS: An interview with John Thurman

Glen Eyrie: Hi John! We're excited to have you back for another retreat on such a needed topic. What  will your conference focus on this time around?
John Thurman: I will be teaching people practical, biblical principles they can use to overcome  depression and other life dominating issues. The focus will be on depression  but the principles have a broad application

GE: Who do you consider your main audience for this conference?
JT: My target is 35-55 year-old men and women who are either struggling with depression or have a family member who is experiencing depression. Sub-groups would include ministry  leaders, pastors, lay counselors and missionaries.

GE: Why are you passionate about this subject?
JT: Great questions! Several reasons: Between 18 and 21 million American suffer from mood disorders including major depression and bipolar disorder, including Christians! In most cases depression is treatable. My unique approach and teaching style includes humor, storytelling, multimedia, research and  practical, biblical principles that anyone can apply. I will include the latest research on medical approaches as well as some information on nutritional approaches to treatment. My main goal is to help people understand how they can learn to manage their thought life (Proverbs 4:23, 2 Cor. 10:5), as well as other scriptures to help improve themselves in body, mind and spirit.

GE: That seems to be an incredibly thorough and hope-filled approach! What are two things you want attendees to take away from your retreat?
JT: One, a refreshed sense of God’s purpose and presence in their lives. And two, the ability to understand their thought life and apply the scriptures in ways that will give them strength and  freedom.

GE: Thanks so much, John. We look forward to having you here and the lives that will be touched through this retreat!
