 About the conference: In his own words
Glen Eyrie: Hi Fred! We are delighted to have you return after your sold out Every Young Man's Battle conference last year. How would you describe to someone what this father/son conference will focus on?
Fred Stoeker: This conference will focus on fathers and sons teaming up and working on the issues of purity together. Men, by nature, easily fall to sexual impurity because they can draw sexual gratification through their eyes. If the younger man is never taught how to defend himself and to guard his eyes, he is pretty likely to be tripped up by sexual sin in a sensual culture like ours. There is no better teacher than that father himself...young men look up to their fathers and they naturally want to hear from their fathers on this issue. They know their fathers aren't perfect and may even be struggling themselves. In spite of that, they are aching to hear from their dads, and this conference will be designed to help fathers and sons to connect on this issue.
GE: Since this is something most men struggle with, regardless of age, who do you consider your main audience for this conference?
FS: My main audience would be fathers and their sons, ages 12-24. My hope is that these fathers and sons will begin to talk about these issues openly and regularly. In my own lives with my two sons, we've been very open, and it has enabled my sons to walk free from sexual impurity. I believe that is possible in every family.
GE: And that is a gift I'm sure every dad would want to pass on to their sons. You've seen freedom in your own life. Is that why are you passionate about this subject?
FS: I was once so hooked on porn that I thought it was impossible to be free. Now that I know it is possible to be free and that God intends this freedom for all His sons, I want to tell everyone what I've learned so that they, too, can have this freedom. It is difficult to convey just how different my life is today from what it used to be. In some ways, the differences would seem small from the outside. But that choking feeling of being just another moment from another fall is gone, and I don't feel stalked by my sin anymore. That kind of freedom would make anyone passionate to speak up!
GE: What are 2 things you want attendees to take away from your conferences?
FS: 1) I would like every guy, whether father or son, to walk away CERTAIN that freedom is not only possible, but possible for them as individual sons of God.
2) I would like every father and son to be able to communicate together about sexual issues without all the shame and fear, and for that to carry over into their communication in all the other areas of their lives. I would like them each to begin to see each other more as brothers than ever before.
GE: One last question--a light-hearted one! What's one thing in your day-to-day life that is normal for you but is probably pretty unusual for most people?
FS: For my breakfast, I always pour three types of cereal into a bowl together (Wheaties, Heartland Granola, and Quaker Oat Squares) and then put a few raisins and dried blueberries on top before pouring on the milk. I like to chew on all the different textures together. Call me a wild man!
