Crisis Intervention and Prevention
Suicide Prevention
When a student expresses suicidal thoughts or plans, one can never know for certain what their final decision and actions will be. Trained counselors take no chances when students express suicidal thoughts or plans, so neither should you.
Intervention is critical at this point, but it is important that we not overestimate our own ability to intervene. Often, students who did not notify anyone of their friend’s intentions say later, “I didn’t want to get them in trouble!” This is followed by regret and self-doubt. It is time to call professionals.
Some things to consider:
1. There is a difference in intent between the statements, “Sometimes I wish I were dead” and “I think I could cut my wrists.” The second reflects a much greater level of specificity. Which best reflects the statements you have heard?
2. Did the student express a plan? For example, did they say they “bought a large bottle of aspirin that day and it would be easy…..”? A plan indicates they have thought through their intentions and action may be imminent.
ON CAMPUS: Follow the campus's crisis intervention procedures or simply call the Campus Safety Office. They may not be trained counselors but they are trained in intervention techniques. They will keep your friend safe and transport them where they can receive appropriate help.
OFF CAMPUS: Call 911. Report what you have heard and your concerns. Don’t withhold any information.
Even if your friend protests, be firm and take action. Be prepared to be called names and to hear all kinds of evil things. Everything can be smoothed out when your friend is in their right mind again. Loving someone means making some tough decisions.
Crisis Intervention
Whether a student is facing a serious situation like pregnancy, abuse, or addiction, you play an important role in getting them help. No matter what the situation, do not try to handle it alone. The campus authorities and intervention procedures exist to provide help for students.
Here are some additional resources that provide valuable information. It is important to be familiar with these and local resources before an emergency exists.
