        1. Make an outrageous request that the individual can accomplish.
        2. Negotiate the parameters of acceptance:
          • Accept
          • Decline
          • Negotiate
        3. Ask for a commitment to act on the request.
        4. Coach the individual to take the first steps.
        5. Partner with the individual and track progress for accountability.
      2. Examples:
        • Harry, I request that you complete that report in half the time.
        • Lynn, I request that you double the level of energy you put into this effort.
        • Mike, I request that you sign up for that painting class that you've always wanted to do.
      3. Outrageous Request Practice: Think of someone you're coaching. What is a request you could make that would propel them to take action beyond what they would ask of themselves?
    2. Celebrating What Is: acknowledging, affirming and endorsing positive contributions, progress, and behavior.
      1. Coach Approach
        1. Endorse and acknowledge specifics. Example: "I really like the way you _____." (Be specific about what you like.)
        2. Notice where the individual is weighed down by concern, fear, pressure, etc.
        3. Endorse and acknowledge the positives in the situation.
        4. Assist the individual in moving toward the future with hoe and optimism.
      2. Examples:
        • I know this team situation has been difficult. I acknowledge your skillful leadership.
        • Jane, you're very good at giving your team members an opportunity to participate at a higher level.
        • Phil, you've really been thinking hard about this situation. Thank you for your effort.
      3. Celebrating what is Practice: Think of someone you're coaching. What is some contribution, behavior, or progress you could specifically acknowledge, affirm or endorse.
